Usually the copyright holder and the data source are to be attributed. In the case of Printmaps.net the proper attribution is \u201c\u00a9 Printmaps.net \/ OSM contributors\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-b\"><strong>B<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bathymetry\">Bathymetry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bathymetry is the science of measuring water depths (usually in the ocean) to determine bottom topography. Bathymetric maps visually show water depths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bike-map-cycle-map\">Bike map, cycle map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bikemaps help cyclists find their ways through cities and in the countryside. They show bicycle infrastructure such as cycleways and tracks, bike lanes, bike paths, bike routes, and include cycling specific information such as bike shops, bike rental or bicycle repair. The most prominent collection of bike maps worldwide is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikemap.net\/\">Bikemap.net<\/a>. Cycle maps are usually topographic or terrain maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-c\"><strong>C<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cadastral-map\">Cadastral map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cadastral maps show the boundaries of subdivisions of land, often with the bearings and lengths thereof and the areas of individual tracts, for purposes of describing and recording ownership. They may also show culture, drainage, and other features relating to land use and value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"city-map\">City map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>City maps are large-scale thematic maps of a town or city that enable the fastest possible orientation in that urban space. The visual representation of objects on city maps is usually simplified and reduced to symbology that is generally understood. Depending on its target group or target market, city maps will include the city\u2019s transport network and\/or other relevant information such as sights or public institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"choropleth-map\">Choropleth map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thematic map in which areas are colored, shaded, dotted, or hatched to create darker or lighter areas in proportion to the density of distribution of the theme subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cmyk-color-model\">CMYK color model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>CMYK is a subtractive color model used in color printing. You\u2019ll notice that the Printmaps logo is modelled after the CMYK color palette. CMYK refers to the four inks used in some color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow, and \u201ckey\u201d (black). &nbsp;Digital data is usually coded in the RGB color model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"contour-lines\">Contour lines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Imaginary lines on ground, all points of which are at the same elevation above or below a specific datum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"corporate-design-cd\">Corporate design (CD)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A corporate design is the official graphical design of the logo and name of a company or institution used on the website, on letterheads, envelopes, forms, business cards, folders, brochures and other print material. Often the corporate design of a company needs to be reflected in the map design used in corporate material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"credits\">Credits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>See Attribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"custom-map\">Custom map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Customized maps or tailored maps are cartographic services for a single purpose or a single customer. Traditionally a custom map involved close interaction between a client and a map company, professional map makers or a cartographic publishing companies. Nowadays online services such as Printmaps.net provide convenient access to online custom map editors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cycle-map\">Cycle map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>See bike map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-d\"><strong>D<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"datum\">Datum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Datums are reference systems for computing or correlating the results of geographic surveys. There are two types of datums: vertical and horizontal. A vertical datum is a level surface to which heights are being referred. In the United States, the generally adopted vertical datum for levelling operations is the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. The horizontal datum is used as a reference for position. The North American Datum of 1927 is defined by the latitude and longitude of an initial point (Meade\u2019s Ranch in Kansas), the direction of a line between this point and a specified second point, and two dimensions that define the spheroid. The new North American Datum of 1983 is based on a newly defined spheroid (GRS80); it is an Earth-centered datum having no initial point or initial direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"deutsche-gesellschaft-fur-kartographie\">Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Kartographie<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Kartographie (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dgfk.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DGfK<\/a>)&nbsp;is a cartographic society based in Germany. It has about 1,600 members, mainly professional cartographers and fans of cartography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"digital-clean-up\">Digital clean-up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital clean-up is the production of printable files (usually PDF, AI, EPS, IDD, FH, PSD or PNG files) that can be handed over to print shops or printers. The quality of the digital clean-up depends on the printing method used. Software used for digital clean-up ranges from Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign to Freehand or Inkscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"directional-map-directions-map\">Directional map, directions map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Direction maps are used to help visitors and customers find a specific place. They include directions specific to that place, usually by car, public transport or foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dpi\">DPI<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>DPI stands for \u201cDots per inch\u201d.&nbsp;It is used to describe the resolution number of dots per inch in a digital print and the printing resolution of a hard copy print dot gain, which is the increase in the size of the halftone dots during printing. Professional printing mainly uses values between 300 dpi and 600 dpi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"driving-map\">Driving map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>See Directional map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-e\"><strong>E<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"elevation\">Elevation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The elevation of a place is usually displayed in maps using contour lines and (or) hillshading. Elevation is digitally stored in DEM (digital elevation models), derived from laserscan images obtained by airplanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-f\"><strong>F<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"folding-map\">Folding map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everybody knows folding maps that guide us through cities and places but did you know that there are countless ways to fold a map? The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Map_folding\">mathematics of map folding<\/a>&nbsp;is subject of vast scientific publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-g\"><strong>G<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"geocoder-batch-geocoder\">Geocoder\/Batch Geocoder<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A geocoder is a program that transforms geographical addresses to their respective coordinates. It is vital for things like placing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.printmaps.net\/print-map-with-multiple-locations\/\">POI on maps<\/a> (points of interest). A batch geocoder allows for adding a number of addresses, for example by copy and pasting them from an Excel sheet, and transforming them automatically into their respective coordinates. This is especially useful when creating maps of businesses with many brick and mortar stores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"geodesy\">Geodesy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Geodesy is the science concerned with the measurement and mathematical description of the size and shape of the earth and its gravitational fields. Geodesy also includes the large-scale, extended surveys for determining positions and elevations of points, in which the size and shape of the earth must be taken into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"google-maps\">Google Maps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.printmaps.net\/google-maps-vs-printmaps\/\">screenshots from Google Maps<\/a>\u2122 in their print products. You might have guessed it already: That\u2019s illegal. You are allowed to print Google Maps for your personal use but not to use Google Maps in any publication. Apart from the legal issues printing screenshots usually results in pixelated \/ low-res map images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gps\">GPS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based radionavigation system owned by the United States government and operated by the US Air Force. It is a global navigation satellite system that provides geolocation and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. GPS devices often store recorded data in GPX file format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gpx\">GPX<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The file format GPX, short for GPS Exchange Format, is an XML schema designed as a common GPS data format for software applications. It can be used to describe waypoints, tracks, and routes. The format is open and can be used without the need to pay licence fees. Location data (and optionally elevation, time, and other information) is stored in tags and can be interchanged between GPS devices and software. Most GPS devices can save data as GPX files. You can also use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mygeodata.cloud\/converter\/\">online geodata converter<\/a>&nbsp;to convert your file type to GPX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"guidebook-map\">Guidebook map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Guidebook maps are thematic maps used in guidebooks and tourist guides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-h\"><strong>H<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"highway-map\">Highway map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Highway maps are high-level street maps used to visualise long-distance road networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hiking-map\">Hiking map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hiking maps are topographic maps with specific hiking route information, including trail difficulty, access, shelters and infrastructure information for walking purposes in remote areas. A popular hiking map is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.printmaps.net\/print-komoot-tours\/\">Komoot map<\/a>, you can print it on Printmaps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hillshading\">Hillshading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hill shading is a technique for making topography on a map appear three dimensional by the use of graded shadow effects. Generally, the features are shaded as though illuminated from the northwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-i\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ica\">ICA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/icaci.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ICA<\/a>&nbsp;(International Cartographic Association or \u201cAssociation Cartographique Internationale, ACI\u201d in French) is an organization formed of national member organizations, to provide a forum for issues and techniques in cartography and GIScience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"illustrational-map-map-illustration\">Illustrational map, map illustration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Illustrational maps are used as visual storytelling in books, articles and magazines. The focus of map illustrations is more design-oriented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"illustrator\">Illustrator<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Adobe. It produces AI files but can also handle SVG and EPS files. Illustrator is very popular among map makers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"image-rectification\">Image rectification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Image rectification converts images (usually aerial photos or old maps) to a standard map coordinate system. This is done by matching ground control points &nbsp;in the mapping system to points in the image. These points calculate necessary image transforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"index-map\">Index map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Index maps are overview maps in smaller scales with reduced contents. They are often used to show the locations of more detailed maps in a larger area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"isochrone\">Isochrone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Isochrone maps (isochrone plan, isochrone diagram) are maps often used inurban planning, showing lines connecting points that have the same time distance to the centerpoint. &nbsp;In hydrology and transportation planning isochrone maps are commonly used to depict areas of equal travel time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"isoline-isopleth\">Isoline, Isopleth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>See Contour lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-j\"><strong>J<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"janssonius\">Janssonius<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Johannes Janssonius (1588 \u2013 1664) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam in the 17th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-l\"><strong>L<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"legend\">Legend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The map key or map legend describes how to interpret the map\u2019s symbols and may give details of publication and authorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"licences\">Licences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is generally important that you understand the licence terms of the maps you use. Many map providers limit the type of use (commercial or non-commercial), the print circulation and the attribution requirements. See the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.printmaps.net\/terms-of-use\/\">Terms of Use<\/a>&nbsp;for details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"locator-map\">Locator map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Locator maps are typically simple maps used to show the location of a particular geographic area within its larger and presumably more familiar context. Depending on the needs of the cartographer, this type of map can be used on its own or as an inset or addition to a larger map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"longitude\">Longitude<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Angular distance, in degrees, minutes, and seconds, of a point east or west of the Greenwich meridian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-m\"><strong>M<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"magnetic-declination\">Magnetic declination<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnetic declination or variation is the angle on the horizontal plane between magnetic north (the direction the north end of a compass needle points, corresponding to the direction of the Earth\u2019s magnetic field lines) and true north (the direction along a meridian towards the geographic North Pole). This angle varies depending on position on the Earth\u2019s surface, and changes over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mapbox\">Mapbox<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mapbox.com\/\">Mapbox<\/a>&nbsp;is a large provider of custom online maps for websites, based in Boston, USA.&nbsp;Mapbox is the creator of, or a significant contributor to some open source mapping libraries and applications, including the MBTiles specification, the TileMill cartography IDE, the Leaflet JavaScript library, and the CartoCSS map styling language and parser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"map-legend\">Map legend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>See Legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"maptoolkit\">Maptoolkit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maptoolkit.com\/\">Maptoolkit<\/a>&nbsp;is a set of GIS-APIs provided by Toursprung GmbH, based in Constance, Germany and Vienna, Austria. It provides large scale digital projects in the web and mobile app space with cartography, routing, geocoding and geodata hosting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mercator-projection\">Mercator projection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection presented by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. It became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because of its ability to represent lines of constant course, known as rhumb lines or loxodromes, as straight segments that conserve the angles with the meridians. Although the linear scale is equal in all directions around any point, thus preserving the angles and the shapes of small objects (which makes the projection conformal), the Mercator projection distorts the size of objects as the latitude increases from the Equator to the poles, where the scale becomes infinite. So, for example, landmasses such as Greenland and Antarctica appear much larger than they actually are relative to land masses near the equator, such as Central Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"meridian\">Meridian<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Great circle on the surface of the Earth passing through the geographical poles and any given point on the Earth\u2019s surface. All points on a given meridian have the same longitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"letter-n\"><strong>N<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"national-geographic-society\">National Geographic Society<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/\">National Geographic<\/a>&nbsp;is one of the largest non-profit geographic institutions in the world. The National Geographic Society (NGS) is headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States and was founded in 1888. Beside National Geographic maps, NGS publishes magazine and runs television channels.<strong>O<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"openstreetmap\">Openstreetmap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OpenStreetMap<\/a>&nbsp;(OSM) is a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world. The creation and growth of OSM has been motivated by restrictions on use or availability of map information across much of the world, and the advent of inexpensive portable satellite navigation devices.
